FIRST is all about the future. The future will be spurred on by scientific and technological advances, and FIRST aims to inspire students to create a better world where scientists and engineers are looked upon as the "rock stars" of the world. FIRST teaches students to become confident, capable leaders, good community members, and skilled communicators, in order for them to go out into the world looking to do good and improve lives.
Gracious Professionalism™ is one of the cornerstones of FIRST philosophy. The concept, coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers, describes a lifestyle of high-quality work, emphasizes teamwork and interaction with others, and encourages people to respect others and be active community members.
"Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process."¹ Respect is of the utmost importance in FIRST; all students will learn how to be gracious, kind, and respectful in all aspects of their lives.
